This slow cooker cake is an excellent solution for busy evenings. Prepare the batter in the morning or while getting dinner ready, set the Crock-Pot, and come back to a warm, gooey dessert. It’s ideal when you want something indulgent without spending extra time at the oven.

I often make this when serving simple dinners or reheating leftovers — the cake is ready by dessert time with minimal hands-on work.

Slow Cooker Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake

🔑 Key to Success #1 – Slow Cook the Cake

This recipe uses a boxed Devil’s Food cake mix to keep the method simple. Instead of oil, melted butter is used for extra flavor and moisture. Because slow cookers cook for a long time at low heat, maintaining moisture is important so the cake stays tender and not dry.

Fold in unwrapped Reese’s mini cups (the minis that come without wrappers). As the cake cooks, the minis melt into pockets of chocolate and peanut butter, adding richness and texture throughout the cake.

Cook time in the slow cooker is approximately 2 hours on HIGH or 4 hours on LOW. Either setting works; I typically use HIGH for convenience, but choose the setting that fits your schedule.

🔑 Key to Success #2 – Remove From Heat After Cooking

When the cook time is complete, turn the slow cooker off rather than leaving it on the “keep warm” setting. If your slow cooker has a removable insert, lift it out and place it on a heat-resistant surface to cool slightly. This stops residual heat from continuing to cook the cake and helps avoid overcooking.

Removing the cake from the heat as soon as possible will give you the best texture and make it easier to finish with the icing and toppings.

🔑 Key to Success #3 – That Delicious Peanut Butter Icing

The peanut butter icing is quick to prepare and brings the whole dessert together. Microwave one cup of peanut butter for about 30 seconds until it’s pourable, then whisk in powdered sugar until smooth. Use a spoon or spatula to spread the icing over the warm cake, then top with chopped Reese’s Miniatures for extra crunch and chocolate-peanut-butter flavor.

You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less powdered sugar, or thin the icing with a splash of milk if it becomes too thick.
